The one word I would come up with for the Grand Canyon National Park is “awesome!” It’s huge, about 15 miles wide and close to 200 feet long. It’s about a hour or two from Flagstaff, Arizona. If you want to stay nearby, there are a number of motels that are not too far away.

You need to make reservations far in advance, though. The view is absolutely breathtaking.

It is truly nature at its best and most beautiful. The Grand Canyon is basically composed of a series of canyons, colorful rock formations and mesas formed over millions of years.

Though they do have postcards you can buy, I recommend taking your own photographs here, so you can

remember this experience more personally. You can drive there by car, but during certain times of the year, they do not allow cars in some areas of the park.

There are airplane tours and helicopter tours you can book, but you need to do this way in advance. There’s also a special train you can catch in Williams, Arizona.

If you do choose to go by car, which we did, it’s best to go to the South Rim Visitor Center, because you can get the ultimate view from there, plus there are lots of facilities for your comfort and convenience. (I am a “comfort and convenience” type of person, so this was best for me!) You can always go to ...

      • one of their pickup points and use one of their shuttle busses to get to the center, if you are like me and are not able to do a whole lot of walking.

If you’re in good shape and love to hike, you can hike down the canyon and really get to see it up close and personal. There are a number of trails and you need to take a well-known one, like the Bright Angel Trail, because there are places along the way that have drinking water available, a must if you are hiking.

Just to be on the safe side, have your own water and food close by as well, because it can get very tiring. Some

hikers like to camp there overnight, but you will need to get a camping permit first.

If you do camp, make sure you are well equipped. Whatever you do, never go out hiking by yourself in an areae where few people come, as it can put you in a dangerous situation.

Also, make very sure that you are physically capable of being able to make the climb back up if you decide to hike. If you are someone who is not an experienced hiker or have special health issues, hiking is not the best option for you.

After hearing about the Grand Canyon for so long, it was inspiring to finally get to see it. Going there is is a gift you must give yourself and your family.
