Finally, the entire Colton clan is together in the same episode of MacGyver. Over the last couple of years, all four Coltons have been introduced, but no two have ever been in the same episode. In fact, the only repeat was Frog, their bulldog. The reason for the gathering of the entire clan was a potential new series, and this seventh season episode of MacGyver was the pilot for that series. It’s called simply The Coltons.

      There were no cast changes.

Richard Lawson returns as Jesse Colton. He was the first of the bounty hunter family to appear on MacGyver. Then we met Jesse’s younger brother, Frank, played by Cleavon Little, who normally was a master of comedy but played it very dramatic and straight most of the time in this particular role. Next up, we met Billy Colton, the youngest of the three brothers. Cuba Gooding Jr. reprises that character. Finally, we were introduced to Mama Colton, played ...

      • with attitude and finesse by the great Della Reese. Oh, and of course, Frog the dog returned, getting as much screen time as the rest of the family.

As for Richard Dean Anderson, his MacGyver was limited to two scenes. He does a bit of his magic and then takes off to hills for peace and quiet. The rest of the show focuses on the Coltons and their latest case, which involves a power struggle in Chinatown. At the end, Mac returns

for the wrap up, and he’s driving the ‘57 Nomad, so he’s revolving vehicles in season seven.

While The Coltons features a solid cast, the pilot wasn’t picked up. Gooding was probably happy about that. It kept him free to enjoy theatrical success. It was right after this that his movie career really began to rock.

The Coltons didn’t excite me. It’s not a show I would have watched. It’s not even a MacGyver that I’d watch, except for the opening scene with Anderson.
