One Sunday every August, Vancouver celebrates its gay and lesbian community with a festival and parade that everyone should see, at least once. The political sentiment behind it, the celebration of equality for this once ostracized community, is certainly the main focus, but the pomp and pageantry and outrageous colours of this unique event are truly magnificent and are certainly not overshadowed by the spirit and objectives of the participants.

      The

gay and lesbian community in Vancouver and all over the world has fought long and hard to have their rights recognized and their individuals to be seen as equal to any other individuals in society. The in-your-face attitude of the Gay Pride parade is certainly enough to make some conservative people uncomfortable, and even those to whom sexuality is a private matter may squirm at the over-the-top floats and near ...

      • naked costumes. Music is a big part of the parade, and everywhere there are dancing drag queens, decorated vehicles of all kinds and fireworks. But the underlying feeling of the participants and onlookers is certainly joy, and boisterous celebration, and even the most self conscious people in the crowd seem to get into the spirit and enjoy the show. I always feel upbeat afterward and I always notice the general
spirit of everyone involved to be happy and hopeful.

The parade itself winds through the streets of downtown Vancouver, ending up at English Bay, where the celebrations continue with food and souvenir kiosk, more music and a party atmosphere. There are usually speeches and politicians and information available. For gay and non-gay people, the Vancouver Gay Pride parade and festival is an entertaining and enlightening event, and should not be missed.
