MacGyver: Three for the Road is one of my all time favorite episodes of MacGyver and it comes as the tenth episode of the second season. Featured in this show is the wonderful Edward Mulhare whose past roles included starring parts in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and the original Knight Rider. Mulhare plays Guy Roberts, an actor from a bygone era of Hollywood who really has nothing left but his beautiful wife, memories of

better days, and his prized vintage automobile.

MacGyver meets up with the Roberts quite by accident out in the middle of nowhere. Unknowing to the couple, a load of counterfeit money has been placed in their car. It’s money the mob wants back. This sets up what is a very long road chase between Mac and the Roberts, and the mobsters.

Leading the mobster group is Michael Talbot, played by Richard Hatch (of All My Children ...

      • and Battlestar Galactica fame). Hatch is such a serious actor, and a good looking one. I just don’t like him as a bad guy like this, though, especially here where by the nature of the script, his character and his associates are more comical than anything else.

Guy Roberts distresses frequently about his car, which Mac practically dismantles piece by piece as he tries to hold off the mobsters. What’s fun about this is that

in the end, Mac uses his bonus for his assignment to restore Guy’s car to its vintage state. It’s really a fun bit at the end.

I can watch MacGyver: Three for the Road over and over again. It’s just the ease and flair with which Mulhare performs here and how he brings Guy Roberts to life that I enjoy so much. Combined with the good rapport with Richard Dean Anderson as Mac, it’s a winning watch!
