There’s some beautiful scenery in the To Be a Man episode of MacGyver from the first season. It actually reminds me a bit of a western. I can see John Wayne riding along the places where Mac is trying to escape from the bad guys.

In MacGyver: To Be a Man, Mac is in Soviet Afghanistan on a mission for Pete Thornton (Dana Elcar, who just isn’t

in this episode enough). Unfortunately, he’s shot, and our hero needs some help from a woman and her son to survive. I had forgotten how often Mac was with horses on this series, or at least in the first season.

The late Persis Khambatta plays the widow whose son brings the wounded MacGyver to their home. Khambatta is probably best known for her role in Star ...

      • Trek: The Motion Picture. She was a sexy bald-headed woman in that movie and she attracted a lot of attention for her portrayal. Here, she’s Mac’s latest conquest (he has about one a week).

The son has attitude and basically wants to avenge the death of his father. Mac sees through the tough exterior and it’s up to him to get the boy onto a better

        path.

This episode isn’t a big favorite. It’s a bit too off-culture for me. The end is touching and all that a good ending should be, but it’s a slow-moving hour in my opinion. In many ways, this is one of the few episodes where I wanted more action. Get out of the house and get back to that beautiful scenery from the opening bits.
