In this first season episode of MacGyver, Mac is headed out on vacation. He wants to go fishing at a spot where his father used to take him to. Incredibly, he always manages to get lost when he goes, and that’s what happens here again. Mac takes a wrong turn at the fork in the road

and ends up at a small diner that is also a flight school. The problem is that some men came in and have taken the place over. Mac quickly becomes one of the hostages.

The other hostages are Kelly Nielson, played by Kay Lenz; her boyfriend, Walt, a freaked out pilot because of torture he received in combat,

      • played by Steve Franken; and Al Tennyson, the cook, played by Harry Caesar.

I really like this episode. Maybe because it’s small in scope. It’s in the US, and it’s just a small story with big results. The bad guys are committing a robbery, and MacGyver walks in on it.

Lenz plays her part with elegant subtlety, and

Franken does well as the Vietnam Vet who has gone through an unimaginable nightmare and hasn’t been able to get on with his life. As Tennyson would say later, though, he came to a crossroads and how he responded here would dictate how he’d live the rest of his life.

It’s a good, well-acted story and one I enjoy watching repeatedly.
