The 2009 racing season is underway with the Daytona 500. I have a few definite reactions to the big race.

–I’m proud of the 24 team. Jeff Gordon is my favorite driver, and he did a great job all day. He also made a daring call, coming in to make a green pit stop when he felt his car going away. Sure enough, his tire was down to the cord. He might not have made it another lap. By coming in, he did go a lap down, but a clean pit

stop had him out before the leaders came round, so he was able to mix in with the leaders and then get his lap back on the next caution.

–Dale Earnhardt Junior needs to stop whining. He made two big mistakes today. He went through his pit stall, his tire on the line, which is illegal. He’s been having problems with his pit stall all week. By now, though, he should know where to stop. He just whined about it and never admitted he just blew it. Then he ...

      • caused a big wreck. Brian Vickers had moved down to block him and Jr was in too big of a hurry to get back in line and clipped Vickers. That accident took out the race leader and several other cars. He whined about it, too, but then finally took responsibility for it.

–The race was called for the rain, and in my opinion, it was called too early. NASCAR claimed that by the time the rain would stop and the track was dried, it would be too late to restart; they

claimed the fans had seen a good race. I just don’t agree with that. By doing so, Matt Kenseth got the win after leading just one lap, and most of the top finishers were there by a fluke of the last caution. It just wasn’t fair. They’ve waited hours in the past. I have to wonder why this time they chose to stop it. Just who was in a hurry to go home?

–Broadcast-wise, I just love what they did with Digger, the mascot for the in-ground camera. What a hoot!
