In 2008, a new camera was installed in the ground to get a groundhog-type view of the cars racing around the track in NASCAR. The groundhog made for great folley and was on his way to becoming a star. Soon, the broadcasters set up a contest to name the animated groundhog.
At that point, not even all the drivers knew who this groundhog was, but during an
early rain delay a lot of them suggested names. The winner was actually one suggested at the beginning by Darrell Waltrip, the championship driver and current commentator on television — Digger.
The next thing you know, Digger has a T-shirt available for sale. By the end of the year, the little guy had some other merchandise available as well.
