Green Dragon (2004) is an independent film based on a true story about Vietnamese refugees as they arrive at Camp Pendleton at the end of the Vietnam conflict. It’s a story that hasn’t been told before, and it’s very well done.

Timothy Linh Bui directed the movie which stars Patrick Swayze as Gunnery Sergeant Jim Lance, who

is in charge of the area. Forest Whitaker costars as Addie, who befriends one of the children and develops a special bond with him.

Don Duong also stars as Tai Tran. Tran makes the bold move to talk to Lance about the conditions at the camp. It’s a move that would have a profound impact on both of their lives. For one thing, Tran ends up being a leader of the refugees, helping to correct and improve their living while at the base. For another, Tran helps Lance sort through a lot of conflicting feelings. He had separated himself from the refugees at first and was a hard-nose officer.

By the end, he’s learned a great deal about himself and his very last scene, a simple one, shows just how far he’s come.

Unfortunately for Duong, his country didn’t appreciate his appearance in Green Dragon. It was looked down upon. I’m not sure how it ended up, but his situation at home was in severe

jeopardy, last I heard. He felt the movie needed to be made, though.

Green Dragon was critically acclaimed and played around the country in limited release. It was nominated for several film festival awards and won a couple, including the Humanistas Prize.

It’s not always easy to watch films that are essentially multi-cultural, but Green Dragon is worth the effort.
