1984’s Grandview USA stars Patrick Swayze and Jamie Lee Curtis as high school friends who discover love many years later. Surprisingly, Swayze and Curtis do well together. It’s not a pair I would normally think of, but they work for the way in which their characters are presented.

The road to true love isn’t an easy one, though, as

Swayze’s Ernie ‘Slam’ Webster is still married to the blonde vixen, Candy (Jennifer Jason Leigh, daughter of the late Vic Morrow). Then again, she’s having an affair with old teen heart throb Troy Donahue. In fact, the affair sets up two really fun scenes. One is where Slam comes home to find all of his things out ...

      • on the lawn, including his record collection. The other is when Slam ends up jumping on the hood of the vehicle that the lovers are in, and a gunshot goes off.

Watching Curtis’ troubles is a little more difficult because she’s having a fling with a high-schooler, played by C. Thomas Howell. This part of the storyline just isn’t my

        style.

On a side note, there is a big production number in this movie, which is choreographed by Patrick and his wife, Lisa Niemi. Also, Patrick was already working on what would be his hit song in Dirty Dancing — She’s Like the Wind — while filming Grandview USA.

Grandview USA isn’t an award winner, but it does have its moments.
