Night of the Zombies” (also known as “Virus” and “Hell of the Living Dead”) tells a tale of four SWAT guys in Papua New Guinea who are assigned to investigate a chemical leak at the Hope Research Facility that is located on an island right off the coast. Along the way, they run into a reporter and her cameraman who are fending off an army of the living dead that has returned to life thanks to the chemical outbreak.

      This

film was released at the height of the zombie craze in the late 1970s and early 1980s which George A. Romero’s successful sequel to “Night of the Living Dead”, “Dawn of the Dead”, was responsible for. Following that movie and furthering the zombie craze was Lucio Fulci’s “Zombie” films. Most of these films were horrible, horrible rip-offs of “Dawn of the Dead” and “Zombie”. This one in particular pretty much rips off “Dawn of the Dead” flat in the face from the badass, blue-clad SWAT guys, the characters, down to the Goblin soundtrack (which they did not have permission for using, by the way).

The film has a mostly jungle setting with many African-esque elements and themes

of nature. First the plague, known as Sweet Death, breaks out of the chemical plant on the island and travels across the continent. Then the SWAT guys take care of a hostage/terrorist situation (beginning of “Dawn of the Dead”, anyone?), then the SWAT guys are somehow lost in the jungle and stumble across a vacant community where they run into a reporter and her cameraman who are on the run from the community’s dead revived citizens.

The group of six flee into the jungle via land rover and run into a tribe community where, in order to show they come in peace, the reporter must strip down to nothing and dress up like them because she knows ...

all about their culture. This tribe, mind you, keeps all of their unburied and recently dead nearby for a proper funeral they are planning, but the group has nothing to say about this, perhaps it’s because they forgot about the zombies they saw in the town not too long ago? Big mistake. The tribe’s dead return to life and attack them, the group escapes once again. Later they stumble across a vacant house, the leader decides it’s best for them to split up as it would save time as they search the house. Another big mistake. The leader runs into an old granny zombie upstairs who looks like she has the hots for him, another one
gets ambushed while playing dress-up with women’s lingerie down in the cellar. Before you know it, the whole house is crawling with them.

The heroes in this film make so many stupid mistakes and pointless actions that it makes Roger and Stephen from “Dawn of the Dead” look intelligent. For a bunch of SWAT guys, they sure know how to waste their ammunition by shooting in all the wrong places when they ALREADY KNOW for a fact that the only way to destroy them is by shooting them in the head! “Night of the Zombies” is one of those movies where you will constantly finding yourself shouting at the characters to use their darn brains for once.
