  • In addition to Leary, the entire cast shines in perfectly casted glory, from the firehouse to Tommy's own incredibly dysfunctional family ( character actors Charles Durning and Lenny Clarke are hilarious as Tommy's father and uncle, respectively, in eccentric, vulgar roles that are some of the best in the entire series)

Rescue Me is a phenomenal television program, expertly melding the genres of comedy, drama, and brief snippets of action into a seething, emotionally driven and, at times, flat out hilarious portrayal of life for New York City firefighters, especially in the midst of the tragedies of 9/11. Actor/ Comedian (and author) Dennis Leary is fantastic as Tommy Gavin, the tortured protagonist of the series.

      Tommy

is introduced as a recovering alcoholic early on, but, within a few episodes, he has once more fallen under the sway of alcohol, all in an attempt to combat his inner demons.

And boy, does he have a lot of them.

In addition to dealing with an impending divorce, he is also regularly visited by the ghosts of his fallen comrades and people he failed ...

      • to save in the fires, almost on a regular basis.

The series leaves the meaning of these visits openly ambiguous, as the viewer is left to assume for themselves if they are actually real or, more likely, if Tommy is simply cracking under the incredible strain of his own stress.

In addition to Leary, the entire cast shines in perfectly casted glory, from the firehouse

to Tommy’s own incredibly dysfunctional family ( character actors Charles Durning and Lenny Clarke are hilarious as Tommy’s father and uncle, respectively, in eccentric, vulgar roles that are some of the best in the entire series.

) Rescue Me is a unique show, able to expertly juggle side splitting humor with heart wrenching moments of drama, and, at the same time, retain full rein over the viewers attention.
