Considered by some to be one of the sickest films ever made, director/writer Frank Henenlotter’s Basket Case is also very inventive, scary, gruesome, touching, funny and disturbing cult films ever made against the most spindly of shoestring budgets.

Brining a wicker basket with him to Manhatten, Duane (Kevin Han Hentenryck) visits a series of different people who

are all consequently brutally murdered. We soon learn that the basket hold none other than Duane’s Siamese Twin, deformed Belial. The two have come to the city to seek revenge on the men and woman who seperated them and tried to destroy Belial. In the meantime, and deviating from the plan, Duane hooks up with a ...

      • pretty receptionist for one of their victims, which infuriates his brother. All of this leads to a disturbing finale.

I don’t like the finale, to be truthful. It takes a wrong turn. Belial, who won are sympathy, in spite of his nastiness, is turned into what people saw him wrongly as: a monster.

        Before that wrong step, Basket

Case is fun and also affecting. I like the flashbacks featuring the brothers early years and their relastionship with their grandmother. The relationship between Belial and Duane is also quite moving.

Despite the modest budget the film is stylish and very watchable, its camp factor more of an asset than a limitation. The effects are also quite fine.
