Over the weekend we watched the Hallmark special, “Loving Leah”. It was an entertaining movie, and quite an education on Orthodox Jews and their culture and faith.

The movie was a about an Orthodox Rabi who dies, and leaves behind a young widow.

According to tradition, his brother is to marry

      his widow.

While this custom is no longer practiced, they still participate in a ceremony where the widow releases the brother-in-law from the responsibility.

The brother, a doctor who is not Orthodox, and not active in the Jewish faith ends up deciding to marry the widow, out of conflicting guilt and ...

      • unresolved feelings for his older brother (the Rabi) whom he had lost touch with 6 years earlier.

This part of the plot was implausible.

Yet, the entire story line hinged on this implausible plot.

To top it off, the surviving brother is in a relationship, and assumes his girlfriend will

        understand.

If you could get beyond this stretch to the imagination, it was an interesting insight into some of the customs and beliefs of the Orthodox Jew faith.

The widow was played by the pretty red headed daughter who was in HBO’s Six Feet Under.

She did an excellent job in the role.
