  • In my experience, zoos have a difficult task to combine large, natural environment habitats for their animals, and well-planned and organized exhibits for the zoo visitors
  • The other exhibits include African, South American, Australian and Eurasian sections, all bright and featuring amazing animals in well-kept and clean, as well as big, enclosures
  • I find that in many zoos, everyone is interested in the 'big' animals like the exotic elephants and giraffes etc, and the Calgary zoo does a good job in illustrating just how many interesting animals come from our very own part of the world

In my experience, zoos have a difficult task to combine large, natural environment habitats for their animals, and well-planned and organized exhibits for the zoo visitors. The Calgary Zoo, located right in the centre of downtown Calgary, manages to do both tasks well.

The prehistoric park and botanical garden are colourful and educational, and even though the prehistoric park is full of statues and pictures, it is not even a bit ‘hokey’ which I was expecting it to

      be.

The botanical garden is an oasis, and I have rarely seen such a beautiful garden in the zoo.

The other exhibits include African, South American, Australian and Eurasian sections, all bright and featuring amazing animals in well-kept and clean, as well as big, enclosures.

One of the features I liked most was the Canadian Wilds section, where visitors can learn about local wild animals; I find that in many zoos, everyone is interested in the ‘big’ ...

      • animals like the exotic elephants and giraffes etc, and the Calgary zoo does a good job in illustrating just how many interesting animals come from our very own part of the world.

Another aspect that sets this zoo apart is its dedication to conservation, which becomes apparent when you read any of the literature or some of the information markers.

Also, the educational programs that the zoo puts on in an effort to bring awareness to the

public about the zoo animals are a wonderful educational tool.

When I visited, there was a session on elephants and their endangerment, with the ’star’ of the presentation a new little baby elephant that had been born not long before.

The children watching were delighted, and so the learning became that much easier.

I applaud the Calgary Zoo in its efforts to make a comfortable home for its animals and an educational and fun experience for the visitors.
