I’d like to say nothing but good things about Michael Phelps. He’s an awesome athlete. I, like so many others, rooted for him at the Olympic games in China. He broke an enormous record, previously held by Mark Spitz. He’s a great, in the swimming annals.

The problem is that I’m not sure he’s learning. After his last big success a few years ago, he was arrested for a DUI. He apologized then

and seemed contrite. Going to China, he claimed he had learned from his mis-steps, that he was older now and could handle all that would come with breaking Spitz’s record.

Clearly, that was an erroneous assumption. In late January 2009, it’s come to light that Michael Phelps used poor judgment again, that he was, at the least, pictured with a device used for marijuana. Whether or not he was smoking the substance hasn’t yet been clarified,

      • but just the fact that Michael Phelps put himself in that position shows that he hasn’t yet grown up, that he is still immature, in spite of all of his protestations to the contrary.

It’s sad for the children, who desperately need role models, and Michael Phelps is supposed to be a role model. On the surface, Phelps is the picture perfect example of someone kids should look up to for guidance, someone they can try to emulate.

Beneath the surface, though, Phelps has a lot to learn himself.

Once again, Michael Phelps apologized and claimed ownership for his actions. That he’s a nice young man isn’t at issue, but his maturity is.

One can only hope that this time around, Michael Phelps will truly learn, that he will put his position as a mentor of sorts ahead of his own immature needs. Only then will he truly be worthy to be called a champion.
