Sometimes you just need quirky to be your best, and quirky is something that actor Peter MacNicol does very well.

My introduction to Peter MacNicol was on Ally McBeal, where he played a lawyer with a lot of weird quirks. I hadn’t known who was before that, but he had done a long list of movies and TV roles, including a stint as a regular on Chicago Hope, a show I didn’t watch.

On Ally McBeal, Peter MacNicol was superb. He was sensitive in his own way and probably the most caring of the males on the show. He

even had a season-long romance with Anne Heche that was entertaining to watch. Somewhere deep inside, I think MacNicol’s character will always Ally the best. While Ally was the center of the show and its focus, it needed MacNicol’s character to really round out the action.

A couple of years later, Peter MacNicol began on Numbers playing another character with quirks. Instead of a lawyer, he’s a math genius. A year or so back, Peter MacNicol had the opportunity to join the cast of 24. For a time, he did both shows, but then he went ...

      • full time on 24, which meant Numbers had to write him out.

I must say that Numbers is one of my favorite drama shows of this decade, but without Peter MacNicol, the show lacked. It needs his unique oddness to balance out the interaction between the two brothers who are the lead characters. The show wasn’t the same once he left.

Perhaps fortunately for Numbers fan and unfortunately for the actor, 24 changed their path, and Peter MacNicol was no longer needed for the new season. That meant our math genius was able to return, resurrecting Numbers to its

        ideal glory.

Peter MacNicol is very talented as evidenced by the Emmy he won for his work on Ally McBeal. Quirky isn’t always easy to do, so his award was fully warranted. He may win more in the future.

The acting world needs all types of performers, not just the handsome Dr. McDreamys. We also need the Peter MacNicols, the ones who keep us laughing, not just on the outside, but in our hearts; it’s a good laughter, a smile, something that just makes a person feel good. It’s a gift, and one that Peter MacNicol definitely has.
