Very often, the old original movie is better than a modernized remake; however, in this case I must say that it is not so. I had watched “The Father of the Bride” with Steve Martin first, for

many years having no idea that it was a remake.

Then I learned about the original, black-and-white 1950 version starring Spencer Tracy as the father and Elizabeth Taylor as the daughter getting married.

I rented out the movie, and I was disappointed.

The old version is nothing close to the sparkling, lively remake.

It drags on, the lack of music is very noticeable.

The relationships between the characters are not fleshed out so well ...

      • The Father of the Bride movie
as they are in the remake.

Kay, the bride, has two brothers who barely show up; we learn next to nothing about them or their personalities, which brings the question of why did they have to be

in the movie? The little kid in the remake works so much better.

I wonder what my reaction would have been if I watched this old version first; perhaps comparing is with the remake is what has spoiled my viewing.
