Here is a fairy tale with some unusual twists. Prince Ronald is kidnapped by a dragon, and his fiancée Princess Elizabeth goes to save him.

Since the dragon has burned her castle and everything in it, including clothes, she’s got nothing to wear, but that does not stop her: Elizabeth finds

a large paper bag and puts it on.

She finds the dragon’s cave, tricks the dragon and rescues Ronald.

But there is no happy reunion.

Ronald is disgusted that Elizabeth looks so un-princess-like.

He does not appreciate what she did for him, all he can see is that she’s wearing a ...

      • dirty paper bag and that her hair is a mess.

        He tells her all that.

Elizabeth very politely breaks their engagement and walks away - not in tears: she does not regret the loss of such a prince.

I suppose the book’s message can be interpreted as “feministic,” but really, it

is up to you how you explain the story to your kids and what you help them see in it.

The book does not show all men as selfish and shallow, like Ronald; it only tells a story of one such man and one girl who had some strength of character and self-esteem.
