  • There are a couple of similar models (which all use the same tapes) which offer amenities like bigger displays, a QWERTY keyboard, etc. I found the instruction sheet to be confusing -- small type, too much information crowded into a small space, but by reading slowly and going back over it as you figure out specifically what you need to know, it is doable
  • The tag strip does jam every once in awhile, but it's not a big problem

If you’re like me, you always have things that need labels, from books to file folders to tennis rackets, and you like your tags to look nice. I told myself for a long time that handwritten labels were fine, but I never liked the way they looked, especially when I want to label shelves, the spines of notebooks, etc. To me, the point of a label is to look neat! The Letra Tag labelmaker is an inexpensive way to make instant, professional-looking tags for everything in the house.

For about $30 you get a hand-held keyboard and printer about the size of a universal remote. It runs on 6 AA batteries and prints labels

on paper, plastic, or metallic backgrounds in a variety of colors. The tape is about 1/2″ high, so it can print either one or two lines of text, and you have a choice of styles of type (nothing fancy, just Bold, Italic, Outline, Shadow, etc.) There are a couple of similar models (which all use the same tapes) which offer amenities like bigger displays, a QWERTY keyboard, etc.

I found the instruction sheet to be confusing — small type, too much information crowded into a small space, but by reading slowly and going back over it as you figure out specifically what you need to know, it is doable. However, I suspect that whoever wrote the instructions ...

      • was not a native English speaker. “Flashing !!!! on the display means the tape cannot be transported?” Now really! How about “the tape is stuck!”

However, even a great set of instructions can’t help a lot with the fact that at times this device is unnecessarily difficult to operate. Because they are trying to cram a lot of functions into a very small space, the interface is complicated, many keys are multifunction, and nothing is at all intuitive. Hang onto your instruction sheet, because you will be referring to it often!

I also am not pleased with the limitations of what you can do with the LetraTag. It only prints

a half-inch wide label, which is great for file folders but not much use when you want to put your name, address and phone number inside a book. If I had more to spend, I would have bought the Dymo Label Manager which prints on five widths of labels. It costs $89.95 though!

Still, if you still think of Dymo as producing those clunky plastic strips with the raised letters, you’ll be surprised and pleased at what you can do with the Letra Tag. I’ve used mine a lot, and for what it does, it has been pretty tough and reliable. The tag strip does jam every once in awhile, but it’s not a big problem.

I have not used my letra tag in quite awhile and now when I do… the print is only partially there…. do you have to repl an ink cartridge or what?

    John says :

If the print is really light, it’s usually a sign that the ink cartridge is running low. You should consider replacing the cartridge.

    Galega says :

The ink cartridge has dried up and that’s why you are seeing partially printed label. You say that you haven’t used this label maker for a while. If it was running fine before, then it is possible that the ink has gotten dried up. There is nothing you can do with dried ink. You will have to replace the cartridge or get that refilled.
