In the beautiful science fiction film “Starman”, Jeff Bridges plays an alien who comes to Earth in response to an invitation on the space probe Voyager II. It was a message of peace; but in typically human fashion, the military shoots down the alien craft, and the visitor is stranded in Wisconsin.

The alien being is pure energy, but it needs a host body to escape from Earth. It enters

the home of lovely widow Jenny Hayden (Karen Allen) and finds a lock of hair belonging to Jenny’s dead husband, Scott. Using the DNA in the hair, the alien clones a human body in the image of Scott. Jenny awakens to see this bizarre transformation and is both horrified and fascinated: it’s like her husband has come back from the dead. But when the alien forces her to drive ...

      • him to Arizona, she turns hostile and frightened.

Along the way, Jenny tries unsuccessfully to escape, but each time the starman intercepts her. He convinces her that he means her no harm, and just needs her help. Gradually she warms to him; and while she began as his captive, she ends up teaching him a concept that is all-human: love.

The special effects were innovative, even for 1984; but the movie

doesn’t reply on technology. The characters are real and raw, and well-drawn. I was touched at the depths of feeling that grow between Jenny and the starman. He ends his journey more human than alien; and though he must abandon his beloved Jenny on Earth, he leaves her with a new life and a new drive. I cried at the end. This is a beautiful movie and highly watchable for every generation.
