  • The only depowering Diana seems to get is not being able to fly, and while I think that she should be able to fly, it's not something to throw a hissy fit over

I haven’t been a fan of Wonder Woman for very long. Most of my knowledge of her came from her supporting role in the Justice League cartoon and comics. It wasn’t until I heard very positive things about Gail Simone’s run that I actually started to pick up her solo comic. I’ve been digging it. As a DC fan it’s nice to have all the major characters (Superman, Batman, GL etc) have a strong writer on at least one of their respective titles.

Last night, I finally had the chance to pick up the animated direct to video Wonder Woman movie that was released earlier this week.

It’s amazing, just amazing. This movie succeeds on every

level. The writing is strong, the animation is top notch, the voice acting is great and the action is epic. This is Wonder Woman done right, for everyone who says that the Amazonian heroine can’t carry her own movie, watch this and be proven utterly utterly wrong.

Even though the movie is only 70 minutes, it doesn’t feel rushed or that anything got glossed over, which is pretty impressive. Also impressive is the fact that the Amazons are wary of men, but not man hating harpies like they could so easily be written as. Most of their trepidation with the male gender is actually explained, and when Diana starts to go over the top with her ...

      • criticisms of men, Trevor calls her on it.

People on the DC Comics messageboards complained that she wasn’t portrayed as strong due to her being shown as “even” during a quick duel with Steve. Now I know, they complain about everything but this is downright goofy. The fight lasted 15 seconds and she knocked him out in little time. How is that in any way even? The only depowering Diana seems to get is not being able to fly, and while I think that she should be able to fly, it’s not something to throw a hissy fit over.

DC’s animated films have been quite good, Gotham Knight notwithstanding, while they’ve been slacking in the

live action department, it’s good to know that WB and DC are aware of the fact that they have other characters besides Superman and Batman.

The only real gripe I have is with the lack of blood. I’m not saying that the movie should have excessive gore, but they had no trouble showing decapitations and blood in other scenes, why can’t you show some blood on a blade that was just pulled out of a dead body? It’s jarring to see a demon get stabbed and have the amazon pull out the blade as shiny as it was when she jammed it into him. It’s nothing more than a nitpick but still something worth noting.

Overall I highly recommend this movie.
