For our dog’s quarterly deworming schedule, we used Canex tablets. It’s very effective in preventing and killing worms in dogs. If any of the dogs begin exhibiting symptoms of a worm infestation (weight loss, sudden increase in appetite, bloody fecal matter), giving them the correct dosage will fix the problem within 24-48 hours. It’s that fast.

However, Canex is relatively expensive. The last time I purchased it was around a year and a half ago and it cost me P125 per tablet. Good thing I passed by a pet supplies store

near our home. The owner recommended a brand called ‘Nematocide’ (generic name: Pyrantel Pamoate). It’s in syrup form and comes in a 60ml bottle. It cost about P320 a bottle but the guy said it was still cost-efficient, since it’s cheaper per dosage compared to other brands.

Here are some information about this product:

Active ingredient: Pyrantel pamoate Formulation: 14.4 mg/mL Manufacturer: La Croesus Pharma, Inc. from Brgy. Sto. Tomas, Binan, Laguna, Philippines Recommended dosage: 1mL per 1kg of body weight

What to like: Efficacy. Nematocide works great and it’s fast-acting. It’s broad-spectrum, so you’re

assured it will kill several different types of worms at one go. If your dogs have problems with roundworms and hookworms, Nematocide can fix them easily. In my experience, any symptoms of a worm infestation that my dogs have usually stop within a day. The syrup is thick, has a creamy peach color and has a pleasant candy smell.

Ease of use. Nematocide comes with a 3mL dropper, so it’s easy to serve the liquid. Simply squeeze the amount in and squeeze it out. Because it’s liquid, you could either administer it ...

to the dog directly or you could mix it with his food. No fasting necessary for your dog, so you can let him have his regular meals.

Will work with young puppies. Nematocide can be administered to puppies as young as 2 or 4 weeks old.

Each bottle of Nematocide also comes with adhesive stickers. Peel these off and use them on your pet’s information sheet to mark the date of deworming.

What not to like: Can be messy. The dropper can sometimes be difficult to use. If you administer directly to the mouth of

a reluctant dog, the liquid can spill.

The dropper is also a bit too small for other uses, such as when you need to administer the medication to larger or heavier dogs. Better buy a bigger dropper for this purpose.

Other reminders: Nematocide is a suspension, so you’ll have to shake the bottle before using. Do not store in direct sunlight or near heat sources. No need to chill or keep in a cold environment — a cool, shady corner in a room will do.

Nematocide is a dog dewormer only. Do not use on cats, pigs or other pets.
