A-1 International Cigars and Pipes is a misleading name for the place I simply know as ‘Chico’s’. Located in an office building adjacent to a downtown mall in Calgary, A-1 looks very much like any cigar and pipe store when you first enter, but with a great selection of cigar accessories like humidors, lights and cigar cutters. And once the owner, Chico, unlocks the second room, which is actually a humidor, you begin to discover what a great selection of fine cigars from all over

the world this store really has. Chico is also extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and loves to discuss his yearly trips to Havana for an international cigar conference. If you like the scent of fine cigars, the entire store smells wonderful.

However, it is the third room, in the back, which makes A-1 truly distinctive. Chico has set up a small room with up-scale furniture, a large television, pictures and books of cigars, and a row of drawers where, for a small yearly fee, customers may keep ...

      • their stock of cigars, and a bottle of liquor if they so choose, to enjoy while hanging out in the room. As one of the few women to join this exclusive club, there were many occasions that my husband and I visited, smoked our cigars from our various trips and sipped smooth Cuban rum, all while in the company of others who had only their love of cigars in common. There were businessmen, trades workers, and others who came in after work or on the
weekend. Mostly, we discussed what parts of the world we had seen and the qualities of the particular cigar we were presently smoking.

Chico also had frequent evenings of music, bringing in bands from Cuba and other Caribbean countries to entertain; he also had rum-tastings, and all of his ‘event’s were free of charge for anyone who kept their ’stash’ in his store. I have yet to find such a place in any other city that I have been in. It was truly a very cool experience.

Is this place still open and what are the hours of operation?
