  • I like how in Some Kind of Wonderful the main character doesn't really appear to be Eric Stoltz' Keith but Mary Stuart Masterson's Watts
  • I love the ending of Some Kind of Wonderful and the film is just perfect, showing teenagers who have dimensions and once again a family we can relate to

Viewed by many as a gender switched redo of John Hughes and Howard Deutch previous collaboration Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful is so much more than this and it is a kind of unfair label.

The stories and characters are much different. Whereas, Pretty in Pink focused on a girl from the poor side of the tracks, who wins the love of a rich boy and has to contend with a love-struck best friend, Some Kind of Wonderful focuses

on a boy with a large family, who fantasizes about a girl from the in-crowd, who is in the same economic division. He also a tomboy best friend, who he doesn’t realize loves him, and a father who pushes him to ignore his artistic talents in favour of attending a business college.

The two films are different and each has their merits. I like how in Some Kind of Wonderful the main character doesn’t really appear to be Eric Stoltz’ Keith ...

      • but Mary Stuart Masterson’s Watts. She obviously steals the film, and Stolz admits it in the cast interviews on the DVD. She can portray pain with a simple downcast, eye or love with a lingering glance.

It is also refreshing that the popular girl, Amanda Jones (and that song by the Stones gets ample airtime for this fact) played by Leah Thompson, is not unlikeable. We feel for her. When she states that Keith was just using her for her

looks and to get back at the in-crowd she is justified. The final scenes, after Keith has gotten his revenge, proves how smart she was.

I love the ending of Some Kind of Wonderful and the film is just perfect, showing teenagers who have dimensions and once again a family we can relate to. I only hope that Amanda finds her true love in the form of Duncan, played by Elias Koteas, who almost manages to steal the film from Masterson.

        Almost.
