When I heard the Denver Broncos hired New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as their head coach, I have to say it left me scratching my head a bit. I’m not going to go out and say McDaniels was necessarily a bad choice. But, when you have a team that is a good defense away from the playoffs,

picking a guy who isn’t much older than your players to lead the resurgence isn’t exactly a safe move.

McDaniels might turn out to be a good coach. But, he goes into Denver with a couple things working against him.

One of them, of course, is experience. Historically, young coaches have been popular but that hasn’t always translated to ...

      • success on the football field.

That’s why you have so many coaching re-treads getting second chances. Also, he led a great offense in New England.

But, he also had Randy Moss and an offensive system that is going to make players look good. That isn’t necessarily going to work in Denver; especially since he doesn’t have the same guys

calling the shots on draft day.

The biggest thing working against him though is he’s a Bill Belichick assistant. Belichick himself is one of the best coaches ever.

But, his former assistants, which have included everyone from Romeo Crennel, Eric Mangini and Nick Saban, haven’t done well as NFL coaches. He might be the lone exception to that.

But, I’m not holding my breath.
