  • Having tried a few running watches at the higher end of the price scale (Polar, Nike Triax) I figured that there must be a few lower-cost alternatives for people who are looking for a basic, good quality running watch with no additional frills attached to it
  • But that said, I think that this watch also has a good sized screen which displays the information clearly
  • I like the split timer and memory feature as it enables me to time myself through certain parts of my running circuit and therefore track peaks (and troughs) in my performance
  • Ok, so the design does not do it for me but then again this is definitely down to personal preference and many people out there might really like it
  • If you are just looking for a no frills timer for your early morning runs then I would recommend that you check out this product for yourself

As a keen runner and fitness enthusiast I am always on the lookout for any new gadget that will enable me to push myself harder. Having tried a few running watches at the higher end of the price scale (Polar, Nike Triax) I figured that there must be a few lower-cost alternatives for people who are looking for a basic, good quality running watch with no additional frills attached to it. So with that in mind I went to look for a running watch that would fulfil this function within the £50 price bracket, and found the Timex Ironman Running Watch (model T54242) for a cost of £36.

In terms of styling I have to be honest and say that it does not appeal to me at all. It kind of reminds me of those old-fashioned digital watches; whilst I am a fan of

retro-styled goods I do think that the design is a little too far out of the old school for me and I am not a fan of the big buttons which stick out of the sides. I also found the plastic strap to be a little irritating on my skin as it does not sit particularly well; when I tied it a little bit tighter to get it to stay in position I found that it dug into my wrists and became a little bit uncomfortable. But that said, I think that this watch also has a good sized screen which displays the information clearly.

In terms of functionality I think that this watch would rival just about any other running watch which I have reviewed so far as it pretty much comes with all of the same features. I like the split timer ...

      • and memory feature as it enables me to time myself through certain parts of my running circuit and therefore track peaks (and troughs) in my performance. The features are a little tricky to learn at the start and I would say that it is not the easiest watch to use, although the instruction manual does a good job so all you need is a little bit of patience to learn the functions.

So overall I think that this watch offers a lot for the price. The one big negative for me is that unlike the other watches that I have used (the Nike Triax springs to mind again) I do not think that I would use this as a casual watch as well, despite the fact that I think it offers more in terms of casual features (such as 12 and 24 hour time, date

        display etc).

I would give this watch a score of 7 out of 10. Ok, so the design does not do it for me but then again this is definitely down to personal preference and many people out there might really like it. But for me it is a little bit too old fashioned. That said, this watch actually offers decent performance and will fulfill all of the functions of a basic running watch. It is not the most comfortable watch I have worn, that’s for sure nor is it the easiest watch to programme but I do think that for less than £40 this is a good watch that is durable and reliable. If you are just looking for a no frills timer for your early morning runs then I would recommend that you check out this product for yourself.
