I am fairly jaded and cynical when it comes to Hollywood. If there’s a movie made about politics, I immediately jump to the conclusion that its trying to shove its left wing ideology down my throat. A lot of times, this is the case, not so however, with Swing Vote.

Parodying recent elections, the movie chronicles the life of Bud Johnson, who, through a bizarre series of events is now the deciding factor in the upcoming election.

Bud’s a nice enough guy, not all that bright, but he doesn’t really mean anyone

harm. He likes to drink and fish between struggling to take care of his daughter. Politics were never really a factor for him.

Word gets out that Bud is the deciding vote and the media is on him relentlessly. Both presidential candidates fly out and try to schmooze him to get his vote. Neither candidate is portrayed negatively, which was refreshing. Their only real flaw is wanting to win so badly that they lose sight of what’s important, trading off opinions on key issues to try to garner ...

      • Bud’s vote. The commercials are one of the highlights of the film. The Republicans making a pro-gay marraige ad got a few laughs from me (Boone even emphasizes that a Republican president supports it) while Greenleaf takes a pro-life stance in what is the most ridiculous ad I’ve ever seen.

Bud’s daughter is both one of the movie’s strongest assets and greatest weaknesses. She knows she’s a hell of a lot smarter than her dad and takes every oppurtunity to point it out to him. It’s funny

at first, but as the movie progresses it becomes snooty and holier than thou. The fact that she got him into the whole mess to begin with, only to turn around and almost narc on him and get him in trouble doesn’t really make her very likable.

This movie’s pretty enjoyable. It’s funny, has heart, and reminds us all that our vote does count for something. The cast does a good job all around. I wouldn’t buy it, but definitely rent it and give it a view.
