“The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning” is a 2008 direct-to-DVD Disney movie release that chronicles Ariel’s adventures before the first movie. Ariel’s mother dies and her father has a very difficult time dealing with the loss. Since his wife was such a music lover, every time he hears music, he thinks of her. This leads to him banning music from the entire kingdom!

      Pros:

This movie is actually better than you would expect from a direct-to-DVD release. Most importantly, the actors from the movie return to lend their voices. Even though almost twenty years have passed since “The Little Mermaid,” there is little noticeable changes in their voices. Also, the plot is not too bad. The new villian, Marina Del Rey, is not really scary but as my ...

      • daughter would say, she is “not nice.” It is also nice seeing how Ariel meets and befriends Flounder and Sebastian.

Cons: The quality is not as good as the original movie. There is no song in the movie half as good as “Under The Sea” or “Part Of Your World.” Also, Ariel’s sisters are depicted as a bunch of airheads, with perhaps one

exception. It is not very flattering. The father comes off as a total jerk for ninety-nine percent of the movie. We understand he lost his wife, but his daughters lost their mother too.

Overall: This is a decent movie considering it was never intended to be showed in theaters. Little girls will probably love it. I give it a 7 out of 10.
