This movie is based on a short story by Rudyard Kipling. Two British officers, played by Sean Connery and Michael Caine (named Daniel Dravot and Peachy Carnehan, respectively), have served their duty in India and are now free to go back home to England. However, they do not relish the prospect, realizing that what is awaiting them over there is probably nothing more than a low-paying job of a porter. The two war heroes refuse to settle for that.

Instead, they decide to become. kings. Yes, that’s right.

They have it all planned out: they will go to Kafiristan, a faraway, primitive land separated from the rest of the world by a vast snowy wilderness and treacherous mountains; once there, they will use their military skills to help one tribe

defeat another, until all tribes are conquered and ruled by one. Then they will get rid of the tribal leader, take his place and claim the throne. However, it is not so much the throne as the treasury that they are after.

When they have achieved their goal, Danny and Peachy plan to load up and run home. The two adventurers set off to Kafaristan. Their journey is very hard, it almost turns out to be their last, but they make it and eventually manage to pull off their impossible plan.

Kafiristan had been once conquered by Alexander the Great, who had married a local beauty, Roxanne, and ruled the country for some time, admired by the locals. Then he had left, promising to return someday or to send his ...

      • son to rule the land for him. It turns out that the people of Kafiristan are still waiting for Alexander or Alexander’s son, keeping his treasury for him when he returns.

They believe that he was a god. When Danny and Peachy arrive and begin their quest, an arrow is shot at Danny during one of the battles; it strikes him in the heart area, but does him no harm since he happens to be having a piece of metal in his pocket. But the locals don’t know that; they think that Danny is immortal - a god - the long awaited Alexander’s son.

Danny and Peachy play in, and Danny is crowned the king of Kafiristan, with the treasury given over to him. Here he suddenly changes his mind.

Instead of taking the treasure and going back, as they had first planned, he wants to stay and rule Kafiristan.

He notices a beautiful local girl who turns out to be named Roxanne (played by Shakira Caine, Michael Caine’s real life wife in her one and only movie appearance) - just like Alexander the Great’s wife. Obviously affected by the name coincidence, Danny decides to marry the girl and start a dynasty. His wedding ends up being his demise.

Roxanne is terrified of marrying a god, she thinks she will go up in flames the moment he touches her, so when Danny wants to kiss her during the ceremony, she bites him on the cheek. Blood shows up, and the locals realize that Danny is a mere mortal, not god.
