The Cabrits National Park in Portsmouth Dominica is a beautiful example of a well kept State garden. Besides the lush flora and interesting fauna, the park boasts a Fort from the colonial era of the island.

A medium length trot up a steep sloping hill brings you to the entrance of the Fort, where there is more

walking to do to get to the top of the hill.

I was tempted to give up, but stuck to it and was rewarded at the end of my efforts.

The Fort Shirley, perched on the edge of a sheer cliff face is tucked in the corner of the already beautiful park.

The Fort has recently been ...

      • restored, and is a popular site for weddings and festivities to take place.

It boasts a breath taking view of Prince Rupert’s Bay, and is a perfect spot to sit and regain your strength after that long trek uphill.

To give the keepers some credit, they have tried to make the walk interesting by placing information tablets

filled with interesting facts all along the route.

This effort is informative and, it gives you a reason to stop and catch your breath on the way up.

I would recommend bringing your own refreshments for a light picnic at the top of the hill.

A canteen and bar are also available at the bottom of the hill.
