Super Mario Bros. 2 for NES just seems out of place in the Mario collection.

This is the second Mario game in a series of many, so maybe they just had a radical idea and it did not work.

Gameplay is completely different than any other Mario game in the series.

      Instead of jumping on top

of enemies to beat them, you jump on top and find yourself just standing on the enemy’s head.

To defeat the enemy you must press more buttons to flip the enemy away.

With bosses you have to jump on top of a flying egg and do the same thing, then throw the egg at the boss.

      ...

      • There are also these silly magic doors and other things that appear as you rummage through the weeds.

Gameplay is completely slowed down by this procedure of jumping on top of something, grabbing it, and throwing it.

Even just picking up extra mushrooms, flowers, and life mushrooms requires you to stop and do this.

        The fast

running and jumping of the other Mario games is nonexistent.

Also, you play as your choice of Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Peach.

Some tasks can only be completed by one of them, requiring you to constantly go back and switch characters.

I have played all of the other Mario games and loved them, but this game is terrible.

Although the game play is radically different from the other Mario games, Mario 2 for NES was always one of my favorite games growing up. I loved how whimsical it was and having to go back and forth between the real world and the shadow world was my favorite part.
