Dark Future (DF) is a text-based browser game, revolving around the mafia or gangster world. Basically, when you register for an account at the website, you start your character as the lowest rank in the game. To level up your character, there are a number of ways. Firstly, you can go to the crime section and do petty crimes. These petty crimes earn you small amounts of money and also add points to your character stats offence, defense and stealth. Secondly, you can do drug

runs by buying drugs at a low price in a city, and then travelling to another city to sell the drugs at a higher price. The third way is to buy and sell in the stock market.

I used to play in the BETA version of this game, and I thought it was very interesting. Firstly, it’s role playing, so over time you may get quite attached to your character. Next, I feel that the way the character is shaped is entirely up to me. It’s almost like ...

      • you’re building a personality within the game.

I really loved the game back then. Not only do you mould your character’s strengths, you also get to communicate well with other players in the game. This can be done via forums and private messaging system. The player killing system was awesome too. When you make an attempt at another player’s life, the success rate depends on the rank as well as the stat points of the characters. If you successfully kill someone, the character within the game really dies.

In other words, if the player wishes to continue playing the game, the player has to recreate a new account, starting from the first rank all over again.

But after the BETA version of the game, weapons and armors were introduced, much to my dismay. I hated the new system of weapons and armors. Players now no longer need to strengthen their stat points, but merely need to earn enough money to buy the best items. I think this system has caused many patrons from the BETA version to stop playing.
