Seduction of Peter S was written by Lawrence Sanders and published by Berkley Book in 1983.

Lawrence Sanders’ novels are often brilliant; however this is not one of them, though it was lightly entertaining. I have enjoyed his other stories featuring Archy McNally and Timothy Cone; but the protoganist of this book did not seem an admirable character.

Being an out-of-work actor for too long, Peter Scuro was enticed into the world’s oldest profession, when an older woman, Martha Twoombly approached him and offered

him money for sex. He went into it as a business with Martha who managed an exclusive boutique and would provide him with clients. He found the business so lucrative that he decided to branch out his operations and started recruiting friends, assuming the role of a mama-san (or rather papa-san). Peter aptly described his services as ‘providing sexual servicing on a professional level at a reasonable price’. Problems started when the police came around to provide ...

      • protection services at a price, an undesirable character tried to blackmail him, the mob wanted to be involved in his profitable business and his girlfriend gave him a choice either he gave up his vocation or she would leave him.

This is the converse side of the oldest profession gigolo, male escort or call boy. Peter S is neither likeable or disagreeable; just amoral to him, this is the easiest way of making lots

of money. I wonder if he had applied his entrepreneurial talents to other businesses, would he had succeeded? Lawrence Sanders had a talent for idiosyncratic descriptions and sentences like ‘’setting up an organization without increasing my personal labor’ (Peter S thinking of setting up a stable of studs) and labels like ’studmaster’. This book is easy to read, and rather amusing, if you are looking for something to pass the time and have set no expectations for thrills or suspense.

Why was The Seduction of Peter S. banned in the U.S.?

    John says :

It’s not possible to completely ban a book in the U.S. However, it was banned in certain libraries because it was deemed to be too graphic and containing too much pornography.

    Jacinth replies :

I really have no idea why the book was banned in the US. Possibly for its explicit and pornographic contents, as John said. And it’s a surprise for to know about this ban, as I would expect US would be very liberal about such.
