I recently visited a sleepy town in the Herault region of Southern France called St Pons de Thormieres. Most people who visit this region of Languedoc go for the sun see and sand options of Montpellier and Beziers, here there are the clubs, bars and fun but sometimes it’s nice for the quiet

life. St Pons is situated about 40km from both of these cities nestled up in the mountains of the midi. So you may think what can I say about this petit ville, well first off it’s beautiful and the people are very frienly, for an Englishman like myself sometimes a bit too ...

      • much. Everyone speaks with the slightly quaint Occitane accent that has similarites with Catalan. But St Pons’ claim to fame is that this is the birthplace of Marshall Macdonald, one of Napoleon I famous marshalls and you can visit his birthplace. Also there are cave paintings that can be viewed on
request, they used to be open to the public but they had problems with young grafitti artists adding to the prehistoric work. Yes this is a sleepy town but it does envisage all that is French so if you want to get away from the tourists and see some real France give this little town a try!
