Piece of Cake by Cupcake Brown. Catchy title and author’s name I think. This is a memoir. The story of Cupcake Brown. This story is very insightful into the life of a young african american girl who’s life takes a horrific turn. She takes us through her family struggles, then her time in and out of foster care, the abuse she suffered, how she coped with drugs and all the different relationships that she had along

the way. Be patient, there is a fairytale ending. Caution: the language is a little rough and at times just annoying to read all the time.

Cupcake is not afraid to tell us her life story. She tells us about her childhood. Life was good until her mother passed away unexpectedly. Her and her brother were told to live with a man that was their father but they had never known him. This man promptly ...

      • dumped them off on a county paid foster care mom. The foster mom’s goal was to collect money and have the kids do what she said all the time. She did not try to nurture them or show affection towards them in any way.

Cupcake ventures into prostituion (to make money), drug addiction (it felt good), gang affliliation( love) and stealing (money, approval). She was often homeless and just ran away from her foster homes. When she was

with relatives, she’d stay until foster care came to take her back to the foster mom.

I liked the section on gangs. It was very detailed and gave me a good understanding of why kids join gangs and how they operate.

As time goes on, she is able to find her way to accepting and getting help for her addictions. She then is motivated by other former addicts and works her way through a stable life and college.

        She is now a lawyer.
