A Distant Music, A Mountain Song Legacy #1 written by B. J. Hoff.

The setting is a small Kentucky Town that has coal mining as the main job of all the male residents. It is around 1800. Living at Kentucky during this timei s very hard and sad. Everything in town is covered with coal dust. Wages are poor. People are poor. This is

      a tough place to live.

There is hope in the youth of the town. The MacAuley sisters come from a down to earth Irish family. The father is a coal miner. The mother keeps the house and makes sure the girls are educated in school and in the chores of being a woman and future wife.

Maggie begins as the main character. She has a best friend named ...

      • Summer. They get along really well and share each others ups and down in life.

Jonathan Stuart is the girl’s teacher. He actually teachers in a one room schoolhouse. He is a dynamic school teacher and has earned the respect of all the school children. One day his penny whistles comes up missing. They try to find it. The girls decide that they

need to make Mr. Stuart happy again because he misses his penny whistle.

They take up a collection but soon see that even that is a tough task. Eventually, he does get a new penny whistle from the community. Through it all there are happy and sad times.

It’s their constant faith that gets them through everything.

I would recommend this book and all the others after it.
