I am the fortunate forever guardian of two Percheron horses. What a magnificent animal the Percheron is. It’s a breed that is credited with originating in France. Percherons were often used by knights during wars and for gaming and pleasure. They are classified as a heavy horse, or draft breed. That means they are

big. My girls surely are. Both were born black as coal, but as they have matured, they have become grey. Black or grey are the predominate colors for the breed.

The Percheron is a highly intelligent horse, known for common sense and steady temperament. They are willing, strong and eager to please. Their ability ...

      • to “catch on” quickly makes them a pleasure to train. For a heavy breed, they are unusually agile and very athletic. In recent years, Percherons have gained popularity as riding horses and have made surprising progress in the dressage arena. The new “Sport Horse”, bred specifically for dressage and other athletic events is usually a Percheron-Thoroughbred cross.
These horses are proving very popular.

As far as size, Percherons are as big as the horses that pull the Budweiser beer wagon, but more refined looking. In my opinion, they have much prettier heads, the prettiest of all draft breeds. If you’re a horse person, take a look at a Percheron. You will be pleasantly surprised.
