  • When I tutored him, I learned that his writing was on about a fourth grade level
  • With remediation, it improved significantly, so it was not a problem with his ability, it was a problem with AISD

Like many school districts, Austin ISD does a better job with its elementary schools than with its middle schools and high schools. I have two children who have attended AISD schools, and I have also served as a teacher at one of the middle schools. There is a lot of room for improvement.

As a parent, I ended up putting my children in private schools once they got to middle school. The middle schools are simply horrible. At one of them,

my son’s honor’s science teacher was showing preschool movies during science class. All of the middle schools have problems with gang activity and bullying. The same goes for the high schools. If you are a parent who is concerned about your child getting a safe education, you do not want to send them to AISD schools.

I mentored a student who was in the top ten percent of his class at one of the high schools, and in spite of his ...

      • outstanding grades, he was unable to make an acceptable grade on the SAT. When I tutored him, I learned that his writing was on about a fourth grade level. With remediation, it improved significantly, so it was not a problem with his ability, it was a problem with AISD.

The middle school that I worked at engaged in illegal practices on almost a daily basis that violated federal law. Teachers were asked to go along with these practices. Many were close

to retirement and felt they couldn’t refuse. The administration had no idea how to deal with discipline issues, at one point, an assistant principal threw a stack of referrals in the air in front of parents, students and staff.

AISD is not all bad. The elementary schools in the better neighborhoods can be very good. One son went to Patton Elementary and it was a very good experience. The teachers there were excellent. Just watch out for the middle and high schools.
