      I bought a Betty Crocker Warm Delights Cinnamon Swirl Cake on a whim, and it turned out to be a good move.

      For a tasty sweet snack or dessert, this little cake is handy. It’s designed to be one serving, but it’s big enough to serve two people. You can store it in the cupboard until you cook it, since it does not need refrigeration.

      I was pleasantly surprised with how well this little cake cooked in the microwave. I’m one of those old holdouts who prefer the flavor and texture of foods cooked in the real oven. I also prefer gas stoves over electric. But this little sweet cake with cinnamon and frosting came out nicely. It’s handy and easy to prepare, since it comes in a little plastic bowl for cooking and eating.

      PREPARATION

      You mix in a quarter cup of


      water and stir, then microwave it for one minute and ten seconds. If you think it needs more cooking when you see it, just add another ten seconds. The cake is tender and moist, without being soggy. It’s light, not heavy.

      It is very hot, and you have to let it sit for about ten seconds before you squeeze the frosting out of the little plastic packet. Then it says to wait another ten seconds before you start eating it, but I recommend twenty seconds. Hot sugary cake and frosting can hurt your mouth!

      EATING

      You can eat this cake right out of the plastic bowl that you cooked it in. The cake is round and about four inches in diameter. It’s moist, light and a little spongy, and it tastes deliciously spicy from the cinnamon.

        INGREDIENTS

        Oh, boy! We have lots of artificial stuff here, and not only the cinnamon. The label lists artificial flavors and colors, plus preservatives.

        The first ingredient listed is sugar, so this cake is not for those who need to avoid sugar. The second ingredient is ‘enriched flour bleached’. It has soybean oil and/or cottonseed oil, which is pretty good, but it also has palm oil, which is pretty bad. Then it lists corn starch, followed by a bunch of chemicals and artificial flavorings and colorings, plus the preservatives.

        The frosting has tons of sugar because that’s what frosting is made from. It also has corn syrup, a cheap sweetener, some butter, corn starch

        and partially hydrogenated soybean oil. ‘Partially hydrogenated’ should be a red flag because that means trans fat.

        NUTRITION

        Well, you can’t realistically expect good nutrition from a sweet dessert. It has 390 calories, with 90 calories from fat, including saturated fat and trans fat. On the plus side, it has no cholesterol.

        The label lists 10 grams of fat, 72 grams of carbohydrate and 4 grams of protein.

        It also has a whopping 500 milligrams of sodium, which is 21 percent of the daily value.

        RECOMMENDATION

        This little cake is sweet and tasty, easy and quick to prepare, and not bad if you want a sweet snack or dessert.

        The nutritional value is terrible, but it won’t hurt you to eat this once in a while.
