  • The original and first Mario Party for the Nintendo 64 remains one of the best Mario Party games made to date
  • This game contains several elements that were unfortunately later dropped and never picked up on again or implemented in the same way again
  • This adds a sense of trepidation because you knew a failure at a mini-game could cost you in more ways than one
  • There are hidden character blocks that randomly appear that will either bring Koopa Troopa or Boo, both of which are helpful to you, right to you, or Bowser, someone you definitely don't want to visit with, right in front of you
  • Overall, I highly recommend this Mario Party as it's boards are large and require strategy to beat, the mini-games are fun and can be replayed time and again, and the game features little extras that are sure to satisfy many Mario fans

The original and first Mario Party for the Nintendo 64 remains one of the best Mario Party games made to date. This game contains several elements that were unfortunately later dropped and never picked up on again or implemented in the same way again.

For example, in this game, if you lose certain mini-games, you will be penalized and lose coins at the end of that mini-game.

Sometimes it will be just ten, other times fifteen, or more.

The amounts vary based upon the mini-game.

There are single-player mini-game spaces that can be landed on that will give

a player a chance to earn coins by completing a challenge - but if you fail, in some instances you’ll lose coins! This adds a sense of trepidation because you knew a failure at a mini-game could cost you in more ways than one! There are also two mini-games where players must all work together to succeed and those were quite fun and unique! There are hidden character blocks that randomly appear that will either bring Koopa Troopa or Boo, both of which are helpful to you, right to you, or Bowser, someone you definitely don’t want to visit with, right in front of you! Speaking of Bowser, in this game, he is on every board and serves as an obstacle.

Features like these were all removed for future Mario Party games and that’s a real shame in my opinion.

They added strategy and difficulty to the games, and the Mario Party games need all the depth that they can get! This game also features eight challenging and beautiful game boards, a nice number compared to the six found in most of the other Mario Party games.

The only frustrating and imperfect aspect of this game ...

      • Mario Party
is the need to rotate the control stick to win several mini-games.

When this game was being tested, didn’t Nintendo realize how painful and dangerous this technique was to a player’s hand and the N64 controller stick? Nintendo did realize this after the release and complaints started flooding in - but what was the solution? Replace the rotating of the control stick type games with button mashers in feature sequels.

Both types of games are boring and require so little creativity that it should be embarrassing.

Still, the mini-games found in the first Mario Party are quite fun

and memorable, and several are fun enough that they can be played over and over, such as the two-player basketball game that uses a bomb instead of a basketball! There are other modes to be played as well, such as mini-game stadium and mini-game island - both of which are enjoyable little diversions from the main game.

Overall, I highly recommend this Mario Party as it’s boards are large and require strategy to beat, the mini-games are fun and can be replayed time and again, and the game features little extras that are sure to satisfy many Mario fans.
