Chips Restaurant
Ankeny, Iowa
  • Last week my husband and I decided to go because we were starving and nothing else sounded good
  • Had I remembered that I know we wouldn't have gone there this last time
  • I wouldn't recommend this overpriced restaurant to anyone who prefers not to pay for mediocre food and service
  • This was not a good dining experience, which was shocking to me since the owner of Chips owns two other local restaurants that are some of the best in town

Chips restaurant has been a mainstay in Ankeny, Iowa for as long as I can remember. It’s locally owned and known for it’s famous homemade, complimentary potato chips.

The first time I went to Chips was in 2002, and the chips were soft and hot and fresh. The service wasn’t that great from what I recall and the food was very, very sparse. My friend ordered a veggie plate and was literally given a piece of

cauliflower, a small baked potato, a slice of a red pepper and a slice of a green pepper. That’s it! Literally.

Last week my husband and I decided to go because we were starving and nothing else sounded good. We were seated immediately because they weren’t that busy and were given a cold basket of hard potato chips (not like I remembered from last time). They tasted good, but I was hoping for the warm,

      • fresh, soft kind.

My husband ordered a roasted chicken sandwhich and a soda and I ordered a hawaiian chicken sandwhich and an iced tea. Since they give you chips already, you don’t get any other sides with your sandwhich. Also, the sandwiches are still $9-12 or so - even though it’s just a sandwich and nothing else. Had I remembered that I know we wouldn’t have gone there this last time. Total for our two

sandwiches (which didn’t even taste all that great) and our two drinks and a moderate tip (our waitress forgot about us many times) we still spent almost $30. What a waste.

I wouldn’t recommend this overpriced restaurant to anyone who prefers not to pay for mediocre food and service. This was not a good dining experience, which was shocking to me since the owner of Chips owns two other local restaurants that are some of the best in town.
