  • We heat primarily with a wood stove, but I bought a small Rinnai, the RCE-606TRA II Vent-Free Space Heater, to put in my basement as backup heat to give us the option of leaving home during the winter months without having the pipes freeze
  • It's also a convenient way to get around the 24/7 demands of a woodstove when you aren't feeling well or want to be out in the evening
  • I almost wish we had a second one upstairs -- it would definitely make it a lot easier to get up in the morning if I had one of these to prewarm our living space rather than shivering til the woodstove kicks in

We heat primarily with a wood stove, but I bought a small Rinnai, the RCE-606TRA II Vent-Free Space Heater, to put in my basement as backup heat to give us the option of leaving home during the winter months without having the pipes freeze. Rinnai is well known for its lineup of super-quiet, safe and efficient gas heaters.

I spent about $400 plus installation for a unit which heats approximately 900 square feet. The heater is propane, since we live in the country, but also comes in a natural gas model. Because it is over 99% efficient, it can be

installed without an outside vent, requiring only a gas line to the appliance. In moderate cold, say teens or twenties, the heater runs almost two days on a 20 lb propane tank, costing about $5 per day to heat the entire basement.

I have three options with this heater — to turn it on and off manually, to set the thermostat and forget it, or to program it to turn on and off at specific times during the day. In very cold weather, I let it run on the thermostat to maintain a basic comfort level in the basement for

pets and pipes. When temperatures are more moderate, I set the timers to turn it on at 6 a.m. and run til the house is warmed up, then come on again in the late afternoon so that the area will be warm when we get home. You can program two different on-off cycles per day, and also set the temperature you want to achieve during those times. Once you have made your basic decisions and programmed the unit, choosing the mode you want is just a matter of pushing a button.

This heater works for what we wanted — ...

backup to give us the option of being away for a weekend in winter. It’s also a convenient way to get around the 24/7 demands of a woodstove when you aren’t feeling well or want to be out in the evening. The heat is more even than the woodstove, so it keeps the floor under the main living area warmer than the woodstove does. I almost wish we had a second one upstairs — it would definitely make it a lot easier to get up in the morning if I had one of these to prewarm our living space
rather than shivering til the woodstove kicks in.

The only drawback to the Rinnai for our situation has been that since the air intake is at the bottom of the heater, the sensors pick up the cold temperature of the concrete basement floor and it runs more than it ought to. This could be fixed by raising the heater off the floor. This is more the fault of our situation than the fault of the heater. I also would criticize the manual — there are several places where a grammatical tweak would make the instructions on programming the timers a lot easier to follow.

I have recently purchased a used Rinnai that looks new. I don’t think it has been used at all. It is a RCE-606TRAII-N unvented heater natural gas Nagoya, Japan I want to use it in the mountains, in a walkout basement of a home. Can it be converted to propane, and can it be made to be vented? Your help will be appreciated.
