Disney’s first big screen live-action musical was “Babes in Toyland” starring Annette Funicello, Tommy Sands, Ray Rolger, and Ed Wynn (among others). I had seen it as a small kid and enjoyed it. I just now watched it again as a twenty six year old kid and I kinda enjoyed it.

It’s definitely not one of Disney’s best. It’s based on an 1903 operetta that has been greatly

changed and unfortunately storywise is where “Babes in Toyland” suffers the most.

It meanders and earlier plot points don’t get resolved. For instance, much is made of Mary’s sheep being lost so a search party goes out to find them, in the “Forest of No Return” no less.

I guess that means they don’t return to the plot of finding the sheep. Instead they get sidetracked by going ...

      • to Toyland and seem to change gears into helping the Toymaker make toys before Christmas rather than find the sheep which remain missing even at the end.

Music is always an important part of Disney films but nothing really stands out that memorable. Part of the problem may be that they took the original 1903 songs and altered them.

Just think if the Sherman Brothers had written the

score instead. Our leads, Annette and Tommy Sands, have little personality and when Henry Calvin (who?; Exactly!) steals the show that can’t be good.

Disney tried again the musical in 1964 with “Mary Poppins” and succeeded masterfully. “Babes in Toyland” more or less forgotten sans the toy soldiers appearing at Disneyland Christmas parades.

It’s an odd picture that is worth a look. Kids will probably like it more!
