Well, the Special Victims Unit Episode “Persona” was a bit depressing last night, but really gets you thinking. Basically, this was an episode about spousal rape and abuse and how the laws have changed recently.

The show starts out with an abusive husband raping his wife (which leads to a scene with a nasty pharmacist refusing to give her the morning after pill because of her

own beliefs) and, while trying, in vain, to help her, the detectives learn the downstairs neighbor is on the run after murdering her own husband back in 1974.

This is a pretty cool episode because the woman killed her husband at a time when spousal rape wasn’t recognized, there weren’t any female police officers for her to feel comfortable talking about it and she even fled ...

      • custody because she was pregnant and wanted an abortion; something she wouldn’t be allowed to do in prison.

I was a little disappointed in the show wasting Mike Farrell’s presence.

I was a huge fan of his when he was on the show MASH and it would have been nice to see him have a bigger role in the episode.

I’m not sure if I liked

the decision to have him leave her after her not-guilty verdict.

I can understand his reasoning, she had been lying to him for 34 years and even conned him out of money to get the abortion without his knowledge.

But, the good thing about this show is I feel it encourages real rape victims to come forward.

And, showing a negative consequence like that might have the opposite effect.
