“Odyssey” is the first episode of season eight of Smallville. This is the first ever episode that did not feature the character of Lex Luthor. Although this is a huge blow to the show, at the least this episode shows that the writers are willing to introduce some new blood into the series.

The plot of this episode was pretty convoluted and seemed really rushed. The Justice League gets captured searching for Clark, who

was somehow picked up by a Russian fishing boat after season seven’s finale featuring him and Lex in the Fortress of Solitude. Lex was going to use the weapon he had searched for all season to control Clark’s powers. The show never tells us exactly what happened that day. We just know that Lex is still missing and Clark found his way to Russia.

So Clark ends up helping to save the League, even ...

      • though he lost his powers because of Lex’s use of the weapon. This represents approximately the thirty-eighth time on the series that Clark loses his powers. This is really an overused plot device. If it never happens again, that would be great with me.

So Clark saves the Justice League, but in the process is killed by the Green Arrow. However, the Martian Manhunter comes to the rescue by flying Clark

to the sun, which restores Clark’s powers while depleting the Martian Manhunter. Does this all sound as rushed as it seemed?

So the entire plot from season seven is dropped with no pay-off for the audience. The last scene almost saves the episode, with Clark finally taking his iconic place at the Daily Planet. Still, it was not enough to save a rushed show. I give the episode a 5 out of 10.
