  • The only real pluses are a solid performance for Jennifer Connelly, who manages to make the horrible script seem mildly interesting, the special effects, and the giant robot, Gort, who we only get to see for a mere 10 minutes

Anyone who has seen the trailer for “The Day The Earth Stood Still”, will have marvelled at the scenes of destruction, the dizzying special effects that show The Meadowlands being ripped apart by an ashen dust swarm. What the trailer fails to show is the mind-numbingly dull 102 minutes that wrap around that 10 second scene.

Briefly, for those who haven’t seen the original, the movie centers around an

alien invasion by a group of interstellar races intent on saving the Earth by wiping out the humans who are destroying it. The alien beings are represented by Klaatu, a soulless, monosyllabic dullard that Keanu Reeves was born to play. The rest of the cast of characters are so unlikeable that you will find yourself actually willing the aliens to wipe out our species about 15 minutes in.

      • of the worst list are Kathy Bates as the US Secretary Of Defence (she actually looks as though she is reading her lines of a flash card), the incredibly annoying and bratty Jaden Smith, and John Cleese, on screen for 5 minutes in a role that lent nothing to the plot.

The only real pluses are a solid performance for Jennifer Connelly, who manages to make the horrible script

seem mildly interesting, the special effects, and the giant robot, Gort, who we only get to see for a mere 10 minutes.

You watch some of these remakes and it only makes you realize how good the originals actually were. Do yourself a favor, skip this one and do a bit of channel surfing, you’ll be sure to find the 1951 classic playing somewhere in TV land.
