  • We have an HD-DVR and it is by far the best picture we have had from any service
  • This hasn't happened in about six months and we have had four or five major software downloads to our boxes since the last incident, so this issue seems to be resolved

Verizon launched its television service, FIOS TV, about two years ago. I am lucky enough to live in one of their testing areas and was very excited about the prospect of having my TV, phone, internet and cell phone all from one company - and on one bill.

We have had several cable companies over the years - Comcast, DirecTV, Dish Network and now FIOS. Here’s how FIOS stacks up against the others:

The good: * The picture quality is outstanding. We have an HD-DVR and it is by far the best picture we have had

from any service. We had HD service from Dish and it left much to be desired. We were hugely disappointed. But FIOS is excellent!

      * I like the way the channel numbers are arranged and grouped together by category. It makes finding something to watch much easier.

      * The free library of ON-Demand shows is enormous and we never run out of things to watch.

      * The FIOS lines are buried underground so weather doesn’t affect the signal like it did with the satellite companies.

The bad: * There is no option to have caller ID on the television ...

      • screen like we had with Dish and DirecTV. This is odd to me since it’s coming straight from the phone company!

        * You can’t watch something On Demand while two shows are recording. This is annoying at times.

        * Every now and then our boxes would freeze up. We’d have to call Verizon and have them reset over the phone. This hasn’t happened in about six months and we have had four or five major software downloads to our boxes since the last incident, so this issue seems to be resolved.

        * The cost is a bit higher than

what we paid for Dish and a lot higher than what we were paying for DirecTV. The reason we are OK with it is because, as stated above, we like watching TV when it rains!

        * There is a monthly “Rental fee” for the boxes. The other companies we used had an up-front fee but then we owned the boxes.

All in all, I am pleased with the level of quality of our Verizon FIOS service. The cost is a bit higher, yes. But in this case it really seems true that you get what you pay for!
