The story is set in the 1641 Germany, torn apart and devastated by the Thirty Year War. The war had begun as a religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants; now, on its 27th year, everything is too messed up to figure out what’s going on and who is fighting who. The soldiers of both sides have degenerated to become ruthless plunderers who will kill, rape, and destroy as they go.

      Vogel (Omar Sharif)

used to be a teacher. His family was slaughtered during the war, and now he is a homeless wanderer.

He comes to a village asking for food or work, only to see the village destroyed by a group of soldiers moments later. Vogel runs for his life and stumbles across a hidden valley with another village in it, amazingly untouched by the war.

The soldiers follow him there. As they are about to plunder this village as well, killing everyone as they usually do, Vogel speaks to the captain (Michael Caine).

He suggests that rather than destroying the village the soldiers get settled in it and protect it from others. Vogel offers to be a negotiator between the soldiers and the peasants, since the two groups hate each other and he belongs to neither one.

      are successful.

The peasants’ leader Gruber (Nigel Davenport) allows the soldiers to stay in the village for the winter as long as there is no looting and raping. Gruber and the captain decide on a punishment for both and choose several women from the village to be \”servicing\” the soldiers, to prevent rape.

The priest, a spiritual authority of the valley, agrees to issue indulgences for those women so that their sin is

      forgiven. The soldiers move in.

Both parties are trying to keep the peace, but that is not easy, and there is some blood shed before things settle down. Then one of the soldiers attempts to rape a peasant girl he likes, one who is not meant for the soldiers.

He flees, fearing the punishment, and returns later with more men. However, the villagers and the captain are prepared.

They fight to protect the village together.
