The Others,” 2001, offers an unusual twist of a hunted mansion story. Grace (Nicole Kidman) is a young mother who lives in a large house with her two children, Charles and Anne, waiting for her husband to come home from World War II.

The children are allergic to sunlight, so they stay inside, and the house is kept semi-dark, with all

the curtains drawn, doors closed, and only candlelight allowed.

Grace is in need of servants, so when three people come looking for work - an old man, old lady, and a mute girl - they are immediately hired.

Strange things begin to happen: doors open, voices and noises are heard.

Anne, Grace’s daughter, claims that she sees a boy named Victor ...

      • and is able to talk to him.

Grace does not believe her at first and even punishes Ann for lying.

However, strange occurrences continue, frightening Grace, taking their toll on her already strained psyche.

And you soon understand that the servants know much more than what they are telling.

It is a scary movie, with a totally unpredictable ending that I

do not want to ruin for you, so I will not reveal it.

I enjoyed the performance of Nicole Kidman and of the children, especially Alakina Mann who plays Anne.

She is so genuine that she makes you forget it’s a movie.

You know she is not lying about her experiences, and you just hope this boy Victor she communicates with is harmless.
